Ecology

My ecological practice focuses on delivering clear, trustworthy insights for land managers and conservation programs. I draw on experience in ecological survey methods, species occurrence data, sensitive species governance and conservation detection dog operations. This includes designing and conducting field surveys, interpreting ecological datasets and producing accessible reporting that supports evidence‑based decisions. My systems-thinking approach is shaped by years curating Victoria’s ecological species database and contributing to national biodiversity data infrastructure. I understand both the realities of field ecology and the downstream importance of high‑quality data, ensuring observations are collected rigorously, interpreted clearly and connected to the broader biodiversity information systems they support.

Conservation Detection Dog work

Atticus is a conservation detection dog trained to support targeted ecological surveys and species monitoring. He is currently imprinted on Matted Flax‑Lily (Dianella amoena) and Arching Flax‑Lily (D. longifolia var. grandis), and has begun work on Dingo scat and Smooth Newt detection. His training is grounded in clear odour discrimination, structured search patterns and calm, reliable field behaviour. Using detection dogs strengthens surveys for cryptic or hard‑to‑detect species, improving detection accuracy and reducing search time in complex environments.We can accommodate new odours on request, allowing surveys to be tailored to specific species, habitats or conservation priorities.

Data management frameworks

FAIR‑aligned ecological data systems designed for small to medium organisations, consultants and community groups. Support includes data cleaning, structure, workflows and secure data handling.I help organisations build practical, sustainable data practices that improve the quality, consistency and usability of ecological information. This includes designing lightweight data systems, strengthening metadata and documentation and establishing clear workflows for ingestion, storage and sharing. My work is grounded in FAIR principles and shaped by years curating Victoria’s ecological species database and contributing to national biodiversity data infrastructure.Whether you need help organising field data, improving species occurrence records, developing governance approaches or aligning with national biodiversity standards, I provide clear, workable solutions that support reliable environmental decision‑making.
